NOTICE 10/19/2020: Commissioner Garcia Richard has placed a ban on campfires on all state trust land in the White Peak region (Game Management Unit 48). Besides the existence of the nearby Luna fire, this prudent decision to prohibit all campfires is necessary given the high fuel loads and drought conditions existing on site. The prohibition on campfires on state trust lands applies across the White Peak region, in both Mora and Colfax County and is in place until further notice whether or not the State Forester implements a similar ban. This includes use of the Black Lake, Horseshoe, Cooks Peak, Wet Meadow, and Sawmill camping areas and the White Peak Dispersed Camping Pilot Program areas (Spruces, White Peak Road, and Ortega Mesa). Thank you in advance for adhering to this campfire ban and for following other fire safe practices.

White Peak Dispersed Camping Pilot Program

The New Mexico State Land Office is excited to launch our pilot program that will bring three new dispersed camping areas to the White Peak region. New dispersed camping areas are indicated by the maps below. Valid State Land Office pilot program permits and valid New Mexico Hunting Licenses are required. Upon applying for a permit, please allow 10-17 days for processing.

Luera Mountains Backpack Camping Pilot Program

Due to high interest, the 15 available pilot program permits for backpack camping in the Luera Mountains went fast and further applications cannot be accepted. 

The New Mexico State Land Office is excited to launch our pilot program that will bring backpack camping to the Luera Mountains for the first time ever. 15 Backpack Camping Permits will be issued for the Luera Mountains pilot program on a first-come, first-served basis. The backpack camping region is indicated by the map below. Valid State Land Office pilot program permits and valid New Mexico Hunting Licenses are required. Upon applying for a permit, please allow 10-17 days for processing.
