Planning and Development Leases are designed to improve the value of trust land for future sale, lease or exchange.

The highly-successful Mesa del Sol mixed-use development in Albuquerque is a model for future planning and development leases and for sustainable urban development. The State Land Office has a firm commitment to use planning and development leases to support the goals of local government, including job creation and economic development.

Planning and Development points throughout NMCommunity Partnership Program

In the Community Partnership Program the State Land Office works with New Mexico’s more than 100 municipalities and 32 counties that have trust land near or within their borders. More than 50,000 acres of state trust land, or about one-half of one percent of all trust lands, have been identified as having potential for accommodating the needs of nearby communities.

The Community Partnership Program was initiated in 2000. The State Land Office wants to work with communities to develop trust land in keeping with those uses the communities have identified as important to their long-term viability and vision for themselves.

This approach benefits the communities by meeting their local land needs for job creation, affordable housing, recreation, and planned communities. In addition, quality development projects provide a means to generate ongoing revenue for the trust and to ensure the long-term health and productivity of the land now and for future generations.
