Surface Resources Division

Surface Resources manages programs dealing with watershed health, site remediation, illegal dumping, prescribed fire, wildlife management, cultural resources, agricultural leasing, and outdoor recreation. The staff supports other State Land Office divisions with field reviews and data analysis for programs including rights-of-way, minerals management, oil and gas frontier nominations, business leases and land exchanges. Collectively, Surface Resources staff responds to over 2,000 requests for field reviews each year.

In all areas of responsibility, Surface Resources pursues conservation and development of trust resources in a cooperative and collaborative manner with lessees. In addition to staff in Santa Fe, Surface Resources employs approximately 15 District Resource Managers spread across New Mexico, collectively managing approximately nine million surface acres of state trust land.

Christmas Tree and Farolito Sand Permits

The New Mexico State Land Office  is again offering low-cost Christmas tree-cutting and farolito sand-gathering permits on state trust land in advance of the upcoming holiday season.
