State Land Office Seeks Dynamic Candidate for Assistant Commissioner of Communications

SANTA FE, NM – The State Land Office (SLO) is looking for an experienced and creative person to fill the role of Assistant Commissioner of Communications to assist in our continued groundbreaking and progressive work at the State Land Office. The responsibilities of this position include working under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Affairs to achieve the following:

  • Promptly responding to all media requests that come to the office on behalf of Commissioner of Public Lands Stephanie Garcia Richard
  • Scheduling media interviews and preparing with the Commissioner prior to the interview(s)
  • Keeping a proactive earned media and communications plan that includes issue and project oriented press releases, op-eds, LTEs to further the goals of the Commissioner of Public Lands
  • Creating, promoting, and maintaining all social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
  • Drafting speeches, talking points, presentations, and reports 
  • Ensuring that the office is engaged with members of the public prior to taking any action on leases or applications through creating and managing virtual, hybrid, and in person meetings and public comment periods 
  • Responding to press or media related to the Commissioner or the State Land Office
  • Maintaining and updating the State Land Office website
  • Coordinating and creating the State Land Office annual report 

Applicants with the following experience will be considered:

  • 2-3 years of experience working as a spokesperson or Communications Associate or higher for a non-profit, organization, elected official, or candidate for public office
  • 2-3 years of experience drafting and sending press releases and following up with targeted media to ensure placement
  • 2-3 years of graphic design experience including Canva and/or Adobe Creative Cloud applications
  • Experience writing policy oriented speeches and talking points
  • Experience managing medium-large websites, WordPress preferred
  • Knowledge of the State Land Office and New Mexico Legislative process preferred
