Education Outreach
Archaeologists from the SLO and the Office of Historic Preservation lead a group of adults on a tour of Pueblo Blanco.
Commissioner Lyons’ education outreach initiatives link New Mexicans to the natural world and increase awareness about the State Land Office’s role in generating revenues for public education.
As the agency’s instructional coordinator, former elementary school teacher, Miranda Miller, is creating exciting learning opportunities and educational materials for students and educators. This fiscal year, 1,750 students and 68 teachers from 21 schools were reached.
A wide range of subject matter is offered, and curriculum is age-appropriate and tailored to meet the needs of the respective students. Subject matter includes: archaeology, biology, botany, energy education, geology, range and forest management, watershed restoration, and wildlife habitat improvement.
All public education institutions are eligible to participate in these programs.
Commissioner Lyons also expanded the education outreach program to include adult learning programs. He opened archaeological sites in Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties to the public and offers organized tours to expose people to New Mexico’s extraordinary and unique history. The program is highly successful and hundreds of New Mexicans have taken advantage of the opportunity to see hidden treasures and learn about Native American culture.
