Land Development
As urbanization encroaches ever closer to state trust lands, and grazing and mining move away from growing communities, vacated trust lands are often damaged by trespassers and the illegal dumping of trash. When this occurs, the land has new potential for residential, commercial, industrial, or recreational/open space development.
Working with the private sector, Commissioner Lyons provides the staff with guidance in identifying trust lands ideally suited for development – residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational. This collaborative effort ultimately benefits neighborhoods and communities, as well as the trust. Such projects often take years to plan, and develop gradually relative to real estate market conditions. Prime examples of community land development include the Town of Edgewood center, the east and west mesas of the Las Cruces area, and the City of Rio Rancho center – each represents private/public sector collaboration.
