Karin Stangl became the Assistant Commissioner of Communication for the State Land Office in 2011. Before that, she was the Director of the Planning and Communication Division for the Office of the State Engineer/Interstate Stream Commission for more than five years, managing efforts to update the New Mexico State Water Plan. She was the first-ever public information officer for that agency from 2003 to 2005.
She also served as the Assistant Commissioner of Communication for the New Mexico State Land Office
during Commissioner Powell’s previous administration from 1999 to 2002.
Stangl was a senior media representative for PNM, Public Service Company of New Mexico, from 1996 to 1999.
She worked 13 years for the University of New Mexico School of Medicine's Biomedical Communications Department. Also, she worked as a morning news anchor/reporter for KOAT-TV for three years.
Stangl received a master of arts degree and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of New Mexico.
She received her accreditation in public relations (APR) from the Public Relations Society of America in 2001.
In 2009, she was awarded the VISTA Lifetime Achievement Award for communication excellence from the
New Mexico Public Relations Society.
In 2000, she completed the Leadership Santa Fe program and the Strategic Leadership for State Executives Training at the Governors Center at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. In 2002, she completed the FEMA Advanced Public Information Officer Crisis Training from the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, MD.
